Rest in peace Bob Anderson, died 3 days ago. 89, not a bad age. Stunt performer, choreographer and sword master. He was in the Vader suit many times, and worked on dozens of movies from Star Wars 4-6, The Princess Bride, Highlander, Lord of the Rings, and even The Hobbit. A man with a passion for his work, kept at it till he died.

Unless you're a big geek, you probably haven't even heard of him. But either way he deserves some attention.

Indeed, rest in peace Whitney Houston.

As the years went by, we drifted apart
When I heard that she was gone
I felt a shadow cross my heart

Also, I know that this topic is mostly for people, but I'd like to give a RIP to Mojang's Get Satisfaction page as well. A tremendous community that I hate to see go.

No... NO! I'm a massive fan of his work! This totally sucks! I've been a fan of his painting longer than I've been a Star Wars fan, his art literally urged me into becoming a fan.

He will be missed indeed. :(

One of the greatest concept artists ever! RIP

Website: The Art Of Ralph McQuarrie

He designed the look of Darth Vader, you can't get more iconic than that:
Hidden/Spoiler:
[quote]Ralph McQuarrie, the artist who helped George Lucas bring Stars Wars to the big screen, has died aged 82.

The conceptual designer created the look of characters including Darth Vader, Chewbacca and R2-D2 and C-3PO.

He also worked on the original Battlestar Galactica TV series and Steven Spielberg films E.T. and Cocoon, for which he won an Oscar.

A tribute on his website said: "We'll miss you Ralph. You will forever be the brightest star in our galaxy."

Born in Gary, Indiana, McQuarrie began his career as a technical illustrator for aeroplane manufacturer Boeing and designing film posters.

He also animated US TV network CBS's coverage of Nasa's Apollo space programme.

In 1975, he was hired by Lucas to design some of the characters and scenes for his "space opera" Star Wars.

McQuarrie worked on all three films in the oroginal trilogy
As well as designing some of the sets including the desert planet Tatooine, McQuarrie also did the conceptual drawings for many characters.

His rewards included an uncredited role in the sequel The Empire Strikes Back, as General Pharl McQuarrie, and his own action figure.

In a statement, Lucas said: "His genial contribution, in the form of unequalled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy.

"When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph's fabulous illustrations and say, 'do it like this'."

McQuarrie also designed the alien spaceships in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.

In 1985, he was presented with an Academy Award for Visual Effects for the film Cocoon - about the residents of an old people's home given a new lease of life by visiting aliens.

The statement on his website praised "an especially kind, sensitive, deep, modest, funny and fascinating gentleman.

"His influence on design will be felt forever. There's no doubt in our hearts that centuries from now amazing spaceships will soar, future cities will rise and someone, somewhere will say... 'that looks like something Ralph McQuarrie painted'."

I have some extremely sad news...

Post by RevanSithLord »

My oldest dog, Babe, has passed away today of old age. I've had him since I was 5. Over the course of a few days he's been having trouble getting up as well as keeping food down. A few months ago, he started using the bathroom....in the house (gross I know, but it was the second sign since the poor dog was already walking in circles all over the house and aimlessly wandering). Parents and I weren't thrilled, but we knew it was because of how old he was. It was only a matter of time.

The average life expectancy of a dog his size is 13 years. I am going to miss him but I am glad that he went peacefully in his sleep just earlier today, rather than a violent cause of death (I'm already sad as it is). If there's anything I learned from him, it's that he was stubborn and pushed on through a lot of things. It will be hard to imagine a world without him. He's been my friend and companion for so long - as well as a brother of sorts. My memory of him will never die and I am happy he is not suffering anymore, but I am sad to physically lose him, though he will be with me in spirit for all eternity. I trust I will join him in the afterlife (if there is one), should my own time come, but for now, I shall remember him. Mourning is only natural, though I always keep this quote to mind:

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn those who died, rather we should thank God that such men lived." - General George S. Patton Jr. (please do not bring in religious nor anti-religious banter into this topic. Thank you.)

In this case....a dog. A dog with a heart truer than any man could have. A dog such as him would not care for things like greed - he would just eat, drink, play, and sleep. He was not naturally violent, but he protected his family when times like such arose and he was there for us to talk to and play with. He made us happy and as such I hope he is happy up there wherever he is - roaming through a field of flowers with dog treats and toys, and generally have fun for all eternity.

I'm very saddened to hear this Revan. I can sympathize. Just a few short months ago I lost one of my dogs. Her name was Pumpkin (named after her fur color), a Chow/Golden Retriever mix. I had her ever since I was 6. She helped me get through a very rough time medically in my life, and had continued to help me for years to come. She never went inside the house, but it became tougher to have her go outside. One day, it got to the point where my dad had to carry her out of the house, into the backyard. When she was brought in, she looked at my mom one more time, and then collapsed to the ground. She died a moment after she hit the floor. She was 11 I do believe.

She was really my mom's dog. Pumpkin followed her everywhere. My mom literally couldn't go use the restroom without Pumpkin acting as a shadow behind her.

I'm very sorry to hear your dog died my friend. Some might say "it's just a dog", but it's not. Not to us anyway. Man's best friend, how anyone can not fall in love with that loyal face of theirs, I do not know. Fantastic quote from Patton.

Peace.
