Free steam keys for beta testing

Post by elfie »

Hey guys,
So my new game goes live on Steam next week and I was looking for some feedback about issues I could fix before release. I thought I would post some steam keys in case you guys want to play it and leave me feedback here.

Sure thing. Used 6th code down.

One I have is the battery level overlay extends past the battery icon when you collect too many batteries. http://i.imgur.com/YGmGK43.png
Another one, a battery pack is stuck in the ground http://i.imgur.com/xVl6qUb.jpg (a small nitpick I hate in games) this is by the pond/river boat thing you ride.

Took the second-to-last key.

Some issues I noticed:
- Frontend UI needs a lot of work, it feels really rough right now. I'd suggest splitting the Controls screen off into its own page with its own button.
- In the "How to Play" page, the way the text and graphics are laid out make it extremely difficult to be able to comprehend what I'm supposed to do. I mocked up a quick wireframe of how I'd recommend you do it: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/384 ... eframe.png Note: The images of the battery meter should be small enough so they're no taller than the height of the line of text they're inserted into.
- Typo in "How to Play" page: "acess" should be spelled "access".
- There's virtually zero payoff for dying. A black screen saying "you died" without the player ever even seeing the monster (unless I guess the monster is darkness itself?) isn't exactly horrifying. Modern horror typically demands a build of tension with some sort of payoff or release. Extra Credits has an excellent video on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyiAR2BXtKU
- When the player spawns, I don't think you should have the player character directly talk about the battery indicator at the top of the screen. Instead, I think you should have them say something like, "My flashlight's batteries are limited, so I should do my best to make sure that they don't run out."
- I highly recommend that you don't use icons in the pause menu, I'd use normal buttons with text instead. Or, what you could do is when the mouse hovers over a button, have text appear under the button that says what it does.
- There should be some sort of confirmation message for restarting the game when I press the button to do so, as well as for when I press the button that takes me back to the main menu.
- Kevin MacLeod's music isn't being credited correctly. Here's how he requests it be done: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/faq.html
- The footstep sounds should be quieter.

Overall, I like the atmosphere you've created - it has a very nice aesthetic, despite its jarring lack of polish, but there remains a lot of work to be done overall.

I used the fourth one from the top.

I agree on the polish, there seemed to be 3 types of trees laid out in their own groups. I think finding batteries and replacing them with a button would be more fun. I think having your character able to see their feet would help with the mines, I could never be sure if I would trigger one.
