The Necessary Steps

1) Enable Developer Console from options
2) Start a LAN server game.
3) Press ~ to open console
4) In console type: sv_cheats 1
5) In console type: ent_fire !self setteam 3

Now you should see be able to ghost around as one of the infected, which will be randomly selected for you.

6) To play single player, in console type: director_force_versus_start 1

Once the human team leaves the starting point you can find a nice location away from them to spawn.

If you die you will be put into a spectator mode and will be forced to watch the rest of the game play out. If you want to respawn here are instructions:

Respawning As Infected

1) In console type: ghost
2) Follow on screen instructions (move away from survivors and click to respawn).

Changing Infected Class

1) In console type: ghost (if not already in ghost)
2) In console type z_spawn x
2a) Where x is equal to: boomer, smoker, hunter, tank

Note: You can type z_spawn X anywhere and it will create a spawn. If you are in ghost form and type z_spawn boomer you will become the boomer but if you are already alive it will simply place an NPC boomer right next to you. Also, the z_spawn command is not effected by the normal spawn limitations so if you abuse it you can spawn right on top of the survivors. Mostly this will lead to your instant death unless you spawn as a tank in which case it will more likely lead to the complete annihilation of the survivors.

Some of these may not work anymore as valve has wiped some demos and wiped some features due to this "mod usage console etc"
Heh. Yeah, the console is fun. I've got a truckload of commands for HL2:DM. Play with me on a cheat server and you're dead. :D

Some more commands.
Hidden/Spoiler:
god 1 - God Mode for Survivors
give [item] - Gives you that item
noclip - Fly through walls

(Not sure if these are / work in L4D, but here's some general commands for HL2:DM)

sv_gravity [number] - Changes gravity to that number. Default in DM is 600
prop_physics_create [prop name here] - Spawn a physics prop
prop_dynamic_create [prop name here] - Same as above, although makes the props unmovable
kill - Kills yourself
npc_create [npc name] - Creates NPCs. L4D NPCs might be npc_boomer, npc_smoker, or npc_tank?

I only posted these commands since guru posted some. I DO NOT promote cheating on online games, and you can get in serious trouble if you do cheat on servers secured with VAC. Valve has done well to protect their servers with password protection, but there are ways around that. The codes I have posted are intended for single player or LAN games ONLY unless the server is a cheat server in which you can probably find rules on what you can and cannot do. Cheat servers are easily recognized via name or ingame messages and info. If none of these indicate the status of the server, enter sv_cheats in the console and read the following text that appears in the console. If the text includes sv_cheats = "1" or something similar, that server has cheats.

Again, cheats are NOT advised to be used in multiplayer, but there are special servers where cheats are allowed. Feel free to remove the cheats or message if need be, for I only posted them since guru posted some.

No need for NPC create. Normal infected can be spawned at your aimer with z_add or z_spawn.

z_spawn hunter, z_spawn witch, etc for the specials.

Wow, that was fun.

A word of warning, seems Tanks can break anything.

I was playing a game online, it was the subway level and we where half way through, when a Tank attacked us. It threw two rocks, knocking down two of our party, then it ran forward and began wailing on the first of us. I was trying to lift the other guy off the ground, and manged to get him up before the tank got to him, and the three of us left ran. We all got about as far as the ticket booths, when the guy I had saved went for the vents, while myself and Bill went for the spawn. we made it there, and stood on the ledge looking into the room below. a moment later the other guy died and the tank came out of the vents.

How he could do that I have no idea.
Anyway, we figured he couldn't climb and thus got a few shots in before he grasped the ledge and started pulling himself up. Bill and I freaked and ran into spawn quickly closing the door behind us. I grabbed some ammo hoping to shoot through the grill in the door at the tank. I turned around just in time to see the tank knock down the spawn room door. (I thought it was unbreakable) It smacked me against the wall, and I died instantly. My teammate didn't even have enough time to hide in the bathroom before it got him too.

That was crazy, it's not fun running from a tank. :shock:

Overall, a fun, scary, entertaining game. Except for the part when there were three tanks after me, but still, fun.

It also seems like there are some pretty easy achievements. Yay.

Heh, same here. Tank smacked straight off the top of the Hospital, just before the Helicopter set down. It was funny in a morbid way.

I wish I could buy this game, but thats never going to happen. :(

The demo was nice, but I wish They could have let you play single player with the demo after it came out.

I've determined that it is impossible to stay alive at the end of Death Toll, due to general AI incompetence, the boat not getting there fast enough, or a smoker hiding behind a tree.

are alot of people playing this now that its out? im pondering the purchase since its so fast on steam. jsut want to make sure Ive got some teamies to kill with!

:0 star wars mod are sooooo needed on this game.

Yeah, a great buy if you play some Source games. Even if you don't, still a fun game. As seen in this thread, there's a couple of people who play it from GT, even though I think they play it on Xbox, but there's me and a guy from GT named Arty who have it. I'm sure some other people will get it to, though.

Also, since you say you're considering purchasing it on Steam, what's your SteamID?

Wow for some reason when everyones l4d demo was supposed to expire mine didnt, i plan on getting the game but just for testing I did grab some srouce maps and mods and slap them into the l4d demo and as long as I dont start the game from the steam app (just start the .exe for the demo itself in the steam/steamapps/folder) and they work. Some are missing the textures or a model here and there buts its alot of fun to get reply value out of the demo and to see insane mobs if zombies running at you in the forest, middle of a ship and in a graveyard cs:S map. So fun! I wonder if you can play MP with these maps, or if others are still playing the demo.

I am kinda wondering what you guys think of the full game now that you have it? maps cool? does it get any better then the demo?

Well the Other 3 Campaign Sets are fun, and the rest of the No Mercy Hospital Campaign is cool. I've yet to see any new weapons though, just the same stuff you find in the Demo. A .357 Magnum, or more variety in Automatic/Rifle weapons would of been nice (where the frak is a MP5? You'd think they would be around because of infected SWAT).

Versus mode is very enjoyable. Playing as an infected takes some getting used to, but it's really fun to try and get the achievements associated with infected as you can get killed quick. Boomer gameplay is particularly a pain, but it's real fun to get the vomit on the Survivors and watch the chaos.

Grenades would be cool in Hell Hospital. Also, I always thought the tanks would be bigger.
