Nar Shaddaa: Docks

Post by Maveritchell »

It's been a while since I've put up a map entirely my own in here. While it's excellent to have great contributions from talented mappers for me to work on, it's always that much more fun to put together an original concept - and just like the last one (Kashyyyk), this one was a lot of fun to make.

I really like the idea of working with a megacity as a palette for a map, but since Coruscant has already been done a few times, I thought it would be fun to take a step over to the next-most-popular Star Wars ecumenopolis - Nar Shaddaa. This is nice, because it has a much more industrial feel than Coruscant (at least its upper-city) and it feels much more apropos for fighting in.

In any case, this is a medium-small map set in the upper-reaches of industrial-sector landing docks. You'll see various ships fly in and out, and the largest ship (seen in pictures five and six - can you identify it? :) ) is docked for the duration, and you can enter one of its cargo holds. There's more going on that unfortunately pictures can't communicate, but it will make it all the more fun when you get to play the map!

Impressive as always Mav. :)

Rainshadow regions and pathing must have been a bit of a nightmare, though. :(

No better or worse than anything else. There are only about eight rainshadow regions. The most tiresome part was designing the unique background buildings (there are ~20 different background building models) and making the ads (there are about 20 of those as well) - I had to sit down and do research on the ads; I know no one can read them but most of the ads do make sense in-universe. To put it in perspective, though, none of this was incredibly time-consuming - the map took a little less than two weeks to make.

OH. I assumed you'd just used the Coruscant ones by Rends. But that's not like you, is it......

Off-topic:
BTW will try to get you the rest of the space station stuff ASAP. Trying to find a format 7.5 can export with no problems....

I had to actively resist the temptation to use assets from Rends' two Coruscant maps. I usually fight that fight about some asset or another, but in the end it's always much more satisfying to make my own. In this case, I ended up with more variety and better design consistency.

Love the layout, but it feels squeaky clean for Nar Shaddaa.

Very nice so far, Mav. I also see a skyhopper and a YT transport. Good work.

That transport appeared in the old flight-sim games, right?

Cool map, Mav. Reminds me quite a bit of the Jedi Knight level, actually.

I just realized that after Null pointed it out that there is indeed a skyhopper on that last pic there and I wanted to ask: is it going to be flyable or just used as a prop?

I'd imagine not, since Mav said it is a medium-small map, but it would be cool to see a few of them zooming around. :)

Captures the city feeling very nicely. Great work! I hope you don't mind me asking, but how long do you usually spend on making these maps per day/week? You seem to be able to come up with brilliant maps like this in a short space of time. Do you have to set yourself a schedule or something like that?

Ahh yes, dangerously narrow catwalks suspended above botomless pits, I missed them. :P

Nice looking map, Mav! I like to see the cameos of old-school ships in your maps; first the Assault Gunboat and the XQ Platform in Abraxas, then the transport in The Big "L" and now a bulk freighter, nice!

Hey, I once tried making a Nar Shaddaa: Docks map, though I failed abysmally compared to this. Great work!

Nar Shaddaa is my favourite star wars planet by far. Looks like you've managed to catch its atmosphere nicely. Darkness, filth, smoke, and neon-lights :D (though I'm not sure about the rain, it looks so white and clean :P)
