Re: Minecraft
Wow! Swords can block enemy attacks with Right mouse button now. You can move forward while blocking then move in for the kill with clicking left mouse. Fun!
EDIT: Just found my first ravine. AMAZING. It has prebuilt wooden structures down at the bottom. And are those... torches?

Yeah, Endermen die when they come into contact with water.
On other note I found my first NPC village in the middle of a desert!

Re: Minecraft
Oh my gosh, 1.8 is so much better. First night, rather than building a home, I just jumped into the first cave I found. It was giant. Massive abandoned mine with two hidden chests (not close together, either, they were pretty spread out). Huge underground ravine that gave me passage to diamond level. Didn't find any blue spiders or endermen, but that's okay, cave exploration is SO much more fun and rewarding now.
I went in with a meager inventory of a few blocks of wood, a handful of torches, a wooden pick and sword, and a few chickens, and I emerged with this.
Coulda picked up tons more, too, but I was mainly focused on exploring, not mining ores or collecting wood, string, and rails from the abandoned mine. It was fantastic.

I have seen 3 endermen and I found something funny....try pressing f6 or f7 it speeds up time in one direction or the other (Endermen burn too (hint hint haha))

My house is nestled right near a mountain. It's like a seaside AND moutainside cabin.
My only qualm is the furnaces - they crash the game.

The mining shafts are pretty sweet. Found one underwater that went all the way to the lava. 'Twas epic.

Re: Minecraft
The abandoned shafts seem to have too high a spawn rate. I found several in one cave. Or it may just be a very expansive one, which is cool.
I haven't played 1.8 legitly yet, just a fly by in creative mode to see whats up, but it's cool. I quite like it. Especially the sunsets OMG.

QFT. The time shifts are sweet, so is the new lighting system. Looks a lot more natural.Grev wrote:The abandoned shafts seem to have too high a spawn rate. I found several in one cave. Or it may just be a very expansive one, which is cool.

I think all of them are very expansive. Because I found the one, and now having started over again (didn't quite like my home) I can't find another. Just a bunch of smaller caves.Grev wrote:The abandoned shafts seem to have too high a spawn rate. I found several in one cave. Or it may just be a very expansive one, which is cool.

Has anyone spawned the ocean biome? It's cool and all, but it's a tad bit annoying, what with no trees.

So this is the beta of the... beta? When does the final version come out? Some time after players send feedback?

Re: Minecraft
Here's something I found explaining the mineshafts:

So I couldn't help but notice that nearly every sizable cavern I entered eventually intersected an Abandoned Mineshaft. Curious, I decided to run a few cartographs in order to gain a fuller understanding of Mineshaft distribution. The following image is a composite of two separate surveys: the first survey is a standard surface map, and the second survey marks only wooden planks, rails, and web - the components of the Mineshaft environment. The color has been suitably adjusted for clarity and emphasis.

The entire map is saturated with these things. They're everywhere, even under the oceans. It's no wonder that you're all alone in Minecraft; the whole planet has already been picked clean. All the other miners have gone home and left you behind to sift through the trash.

For SSP:
Your current home is on an old chunk, so if you REALLY want to experience the new chunks, you're going to rebuild your home, anyway. The only difference is you currently have the supplies rather than needing to obtain the supplies, anyway
For the GT SMP:
You have to walk a LONG way to get new chunks. Even chunks that don't have anything built on them may have been explored and generated previously. So it's almost not worth it.

Re: Minecraft
Also in regards to your old worlds; the water level in 1.8 is one block lower than in 1.7.3 and new chunks cut awkwardly into old chunks so you'd end up with random flat walls where the old chunks end and the new ones begin. Though like most of those above me said; if you've explored your world thoroughly have fun looking for them.

Re: Minecraft
Growing Melons is great fun. here's how I figured it out:
You have to have adjacent sqaures to the planted Melon that are tilled and irrigated, but don't have any crops planted. Melons will grow on squares like these. Then you can harvest the Melons as long as the original plant is there!
