Re: Free Models?
It's ok to use only if you have permission from the author to use. If the original model comes with permission to be reproduced in any other form, then you're ok. If it doesn't, you need to contact the author to acquire permission.

Re: Free Models?
The other thing it is not just a matter of exporting to a msh file. The 3DS would have to be imported to XSI then fixed up rescaled and probably retexture mapped to some degree. Oh and textures are most likely not power of 2 TGA files which you would have to convert to make them so.
Other than that it's easy

They're free, so i THINK it's okay. I checked, but most models don't come with a texture, so good luck!

Re: Free Models?
That's a request thread question
Make sure you notice the model's source in your credits, if you've got permission to use it!

I found this website on the internet one day, and I was wondering if it is ok to use. Aparently all the models are already converted to obj and could be exported to XSI. Will this process work. Also one last thing. On some models it says that it is animated already. Does that mean that is already set to be used as a ship, tank or turret object?

Re: http://www.the3dstudio.com/
If you find models at sites like that, you're welcome to use them, as long as you give credit where credit is due.
Personally I usually prefer not to, since they're
a) usually all real-world objects, and
b) usually too high-poly to be efficient in SWBF2.
But they're ok by the rules.

How to use Other people's odf models
Here is a website that have some awsome 3D models already converted to obj. Note: I know that I have to ask, and give credit to the author for the model!!! Anyway here is one model I had my eye on.
https://www.the3dstudio.com/product_det ... duct=17174
It cost a little, but it includes textures, and is already animated. I was wondering if all I had to do was change the properties to msh. If not could you please tell me the steps involved? Remember I am a fairly new to this.
Thanks

Re: How to use Other people's odf models
Setting up a model you found on the internet is no different than making one of your own(except sometimes can be alot more work), you'll still need to follow the guidelines set by Pandemic, the process is the same, have a look at the art_guide.doc.
Also, an ODF is an Object Definition File, it's just a text file that defines the properties of the object so the game engine knows what to do with it.
I think you posted something similar to this once before:

Re: Free Models?
I'll just merge them again since you're still talking about importing internet models, there's no need for multiple topics on this subject since there's literally millions of models on the internet and thousands of sites to download them from.

I found an awesome site for modelling.
I found this awesome site, its called turbosquid and people there make models in all sorts of formats, most you need to pay for but some are free to use. I found a few, just search around the site for things. (just to inform you, I'm not trying to advertise) Some people release them free. Take a look, there might be something you want. I found some. What do you guys think?
(some even come with texture and i found one with uv mapping.-(is that significant))

A website of SW models
The models weren't made for SWBF, but are just models in 3ds/Max/other formats that modelers may be able to convert for SWBF, if its okay with the original creators.

Re: A website of SW models
the problem is that the models on the site were made for movies and 99% of the models have far too many pols for battlefront. additionally most dont have UVs that can be used for games (tiled large texture with no details) because all details are modeled on.

NASA models
So I just now found out that NASA apparently hosts 3D models of various space-related objects (Spacecrafts, stations, suits, etc.) for anyone to use. Most of them are in .3ds format, but others are in .obj and other file formats. They still should be able to be converted, though.

Just thought it might be useful to leave this here for somebody to put in their latest modmap, if they manage to get the polycount down (Which probably shouldn't be too bad).

Actually, it is. Depends on the model I'm sure, but it was a long and painful process for Marth to lower the poly count in the lunar lander.
