War Thunder (beta) (F2P)

Post by kinetosimpetus »

I started playing War Thunder, which is currently in open beta. If you've played WoWp, WT is like that, but a lot better imho. All the planes respond quicker to controls, and there are a lot of modes.
Hidden/Spoiler:
Arcade/Random Battles
Jump into a quick battle with highly forgiving flight models and easy controls.

Spawn in the air.

"Relatively" small battlefields

When you get shot down or crash, jump into the next plane in your nation's hangar, no being the first to die and then sit and watch the rest of the battle bored to death or leave and join a different battle in a different plane.

Nations all mixed up, like WoT and WoWp

Infinite fuel and ammo (by reloading mid air)

Domination (Conquest/TDM) and Ground Strike (uh, shoot ground targets/TDM)

Historical Battles
More realistic flight models.

Still allows 3rd person, cockpit, and virtual view.

Still shows HUD

No target lead indicator

Take place on large battlefields where actual battles took place from WWII to Korea

Nations limited to accurate nations for the battle

Limited fuel and ammo. Reload, refuel and repair by returning to airbase and landing.

Full Real
Cockpit view only

No virtual instructor, full flight sim controls, including adjusting magnetos and whatever

Little HUD, none on enemy planes at least

There are also several sets of controls from simple to full real, and the controls allow pretty advanced adjustments beyond sensitivity and deadzone, like exponential, and other stuff that i don't even know. Every axis is separately customizable, and multiple functions can be assigned to one button.
It looks and feels a lot more realistic than WoWp to me. And a specific response to one of Mav's complaints about WoWp, I shot down a lvl 15 FW-190 in my lvl 4 P-40E-1 in a historical battle. (lvl's go from 0 to 20)

Does anyone else already play? If so, what's your favorite nation/plane?

I like the Russian's starting reserve I-15's, very agile, but after the lvl 1 I-153 (which is basically just an I-15 with retracting gear, it took till lvl 5 for me to be impressed by a Russian plane, the Il-2 Sturmovik ground attacker. My current favorite American plane is probably my fully upgraded P-40E-1 Kittyhawk, although I have a couple lvl 6 planes as well, and the F6F Hellcat is comparable, but has more explosives.

You had me at lots of planes, but lost me again at "lot's[sic] of compatible devices." It always galls me when anyone who calls himself a professional content producer can't use the language they're advertising/writing in.

But other than the elementary-school grammar failure, looks neat. Looks a lot like what Wargaming's planning to do with WoWp/WoT/WoWs. Does leveling suck less or is it the same awful grind WoT/Wp has?

Russian is their native language, thus the grammar failure.

The grind is pretty different from WoT/WoWP, would be considered better by most.

It's still somewhat of a grind, but doesn't feel as frustrating to me with the fighters, because they do better at going where you point them when you point them there, rather than a second later like in WoWp, and being able to respawn helps, too. Bombers don't seem as good as fighters right now because they don't rack up the points as fast as fighters (even though they can win the game for the team), hardly anyone escorts them in random arcade battles, and American fighters often take out ground targets before bombers get there because they all strap bombs as well. After patch 1.27 (which I started playing after), bombers have to unlock the more powerful bomb loads, but I was able to purchase rockets and bombs for my Hellcat straight away.
Oh, and win/lose isn't as important in WT for gaining xp. You can do great, but have an idiot team that loses, and still get loads of xp.
And you can unlock several planes at each level. When I got my Americans to lvl 6, I had the option to unlock 2 different P-39 Airacobras plus the F6F Hellcat, and I could afford to get all of them, but only chose one of the P-39's because I didn't want to get both right away.

There are a few other grammar failures ingame as well, but otherwise it seems pretty polished.

Weak. There are no excuses to spend millions of dollars on a game and not shell out $9.50/hr for an editor. Besides, it's the job of a localization department to know a language - if they can't hire competent people in one area, how do I know they're hiring competent people to make a game?

In any case, that nitpick aside, I'm sure I'll give it a try down the road. It's been a while since I've looked at WoWp anyway - since I changed PCs, I haven't played it (it's been months). I don't really care for hard flight sims as entertainment - that's my day-to-day job - I prefer much looser and more arcade-y sims like space sims. I actually really liked what Warplanes did with its physics and interface - their targeting HUD was nice.
because they do better at going where you point them when you point them there
Is the camera substantially different? There's a lot of room for the change in the feel of flight when you start working with a third-person camera. Even discounting any disjoint of movement with the camera, the more the camera is above the aircraft, the less it feels like a point-and-go movement. The closer the camera is to locked right behind the aircraft, the more it feels like a cockpit view, which is going to feel the most point-and-go.

The third person camera is similar to the one in WoWp, but instead of scrolling in and out, it's at normal position, or zoomed in, and it also has the zoom and point at locked target view.

What I meant was more about the responsiveness of the plane's control surfaces. In WoWp, it took a full second for any fighter to go from no rotation to their full roll rate, so most of the joystick movements I was doing was simply trying to recover from over turning, and then correct the over correcting, just wrestling with my plane to get it pointed anywhere close to the opponent.
In WT, they get to their max roll rate a lot faster, so I don't feel like I'm wrestling my own plane just to fly in a straight line or at a target. I've tried both combinations of WoWp/WT and Mouse/Joystick, and WT is much better with both control types, although I haven't used the joystick against other players in WT yet.

I also found the default HUD of WoWp to be tricky, I'd be looping around a guy, come to start pointing at him again, line up... and totally miss because I was aiming with my speedometer not my crosshairs... in WT the speed and altitude gauges are text in the corner, not circles in front of the plane. The mouse moves a circle that the plane endeavors to point at, and where it is truly pointed is marked by a crosshair.

I had seen that trailer earlier today, was disappointed that it was only a cinematic trailer and wasn't actually teasing much.

Hm, yes, it doesn't really show much.

Based on some speculation in this video however, it looks like it could be interesting.

Also this one.

UPDATE
Image
Changelog +Video

Youtube Previews (Probably mostly from the dev server)

Highlights

Several fixed flight models, F4U variants, P-47D-25 and others
Several new planes, F-80C, F9F-5, F8F-1, F8F-1B, BTD-1, P-47D-28, Vampire F.B 5, Yak-9k, Yak-17, and a couple LaGG's and La's
F-86A-5, F-80C, and F8F-1 have the M3 Browning mg with faster fire rate, F8F-1B and F9F-5 have AN/M3 cannons
New modifications and screen
Lots of new secondary weapon mods for German fighters like extra wing mounted cannons and rockets
F8F variants can equip [not so] "Tiny Tim" rockets, others such as the F4U's, F6F, B-25, etc. may be able to in the future
Buffed machine guns
Ingame map screen can be accessed by web browser on port 8111, works on tablets or dual screens.

Note, there IS a crew lock added, similar to how WoT does it, but it ONLY affects Arcade and Historical Battle players who leave the game in the first 5 minutes, so it should only affect you if you quit at the beginning, and even if you fly out in HB and get instantly killed, you're probably past the 5 minute mark anyway and it won't affect you. Full Real has no lock.

I tried this game out a month or two ago, and I played one match. I had trouble controlling the plane and i just kept on getting shot down. Now of course, I might give this game another try, but I have another game has a lot of planes I like to fly and jump out of.

After saying that, I still did enjoy the game when I played it. It looked like a good game, but controlling the plane didn't feel right to me.

Started playing a couple weeks ago thanks to Kinetos' gentle pushes to get me to play it. I'm really enjoying me. My ingame name is, shocker, THEWULFMAN. Who would have guessed, right? :p

Rarely do I love CGI trailers anymore as they simply represent the game they're for. This one, however, does capture the awesomeness of War Thunder and what is yet to come. Though, given, not every moment is as epic as this. :p
